Here at the NSSA, we offer a range of opportunities for our young sailors to get involved in. These opportunities are all aimed at allowing our young people to experience new challenges, expand their sailing experiences and develop into well-rounded individuals.
Our sailing events are not just competitions, they are also an opportunity to learn. We aim to provide top-level coaches at as many of our events as possible. In particular, we always have some great coaches at our National Regatta, providing both on-the-water advice and evening onshore briefings. At the 2017 National Regatta, we were lucky enough to have RYA coach Katie Tomsett with us for the week, as well as an evening visit from Simon Rowell, the RYA meteorologist.
Each year, at the end of our National Regatta, we award several young people with the prestigious President's Award. This award recognises young people who have shown an outstanding contribution to the sport. The award is highly respected within youth sailing. Young people can be nominated for this event at the National Regatta.
High Flyers Trip
With the support of the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation, each year we are able to send a group of young people on the High Flyers Trip. Young people who are selected for this award travel down to Weymouth for several days of sailing in the magnificent Weymouth Bay at the Andrew Simpson Sailing Centre. During this time, they receive plenty of coaching, try new boats, and spend time with sailors from all over the country. Young people can be nominated for this event at the National Regatta.
Eric Twiname Entry
Every year we offer the chance for some of our aspiring team racers to experience top level competition at the RYA Eric Twiname Youth and Junior Team Racing. The winners of the NSSA doublehanded team racing event in March are awarded the opportunity to represent the NSSA at the Eric Twiname event in October. Entry to the event is provided by the NSSA, with teams competing as in either the 'youth' or 'junior' category depending on their ages.
Merlin Rockets Partnership
In 2017, the NSSA entered into a partnership with the Merlin Rockets Owners Association to allow some of our young sailors to have a go at Merlin Rocket racing. In August, 6 young NSSA sailors attended the Merlin Rocket National Championships in Pwllheli. Boats, entry fees, association membership and mentoring were all provided by the Merlin Rockets Owners Association and their sponsors. This opportunity gave some of our young sailors the chance to try a completely different boat, and experience top level racing at an amazing venue. Applications for the 2018 Merlin Rocket National Championships will open in Spring 2018.
